A Little Wonder

There is something so sweet about a child's curiosity—the way the simplest things can become a whole world of wonder.

In this little scene, a child pauses beneath the tree, holding a Petoskey stone butterfly while looking up at a bird perched above. It captures that beautiful childhood habit of stopping to notice the things adults sometimes rush past.

I especially love the natural shape of his “knitted” bonnet, created entirely from the texture and form of a Lake Huron stone. His profile is another favourite—a beautiful stone naturally shaped and smoothed by the water, with a sea-glass piece tucked behind it to complete the look.

The butterfly is a Petoskey stone, connecting this little moment of wonder to the Great Lakes where so many of my stones are found. The driftwood branch and tiny pieces of sea glass add to the feeling of a child exploring the world around him.

Nothing is cut or reshaped to create the figures. I simply search for stones whose natural shapes already seem to have a story waiting to be told.
