Your Hand on My Shoulder

“Your guiding hand on my shoulder will remain with me forever.”

When we lose someone who helped guide us through life—a father, grandfather, mentor, teacher, or someone who always seemed to know what to say—we can miss their physical presence terribly.

But what they taught us doesn't disappear.

Their values stay with us. Their advice becomes part of the way we make decisions. Their voice somehow still shows up when we need it most.

Your Hand on My Shoulder is about that feeling.

The person may no longer be physically beside us, but the guidance they gave us continues to shape who we are.

The figures are created from naturally shaped Lake Huron stones, paired with a beautiful piece of driftwood. I don't cut or reshape the stones to make them fit. Instead, I spend a lot of time looking through thousands of stones until I find the ones that seem to already know what they want to become. 😊

Look closely and you'll see the individual character in each one—the natural markings, textures, colours and shapes created over time. The gentle curve of the profiles, the different body shapes, and especially the way the darker stones form the guiding hand resting on the shoulder all come from the natural shapes I found.

The result is a quiet moment between two people—a reminder that someone can continue to walk with us, even when we can no longer walk beside them.

A Different Kind of Memorial

I've had many people ask me to create artwork about someone they've lost.

Sometimes they come looking for an angel or a traditional memorial piece.

But I often encourage people to think about something else:
